Rough Week at Work

I realized that I haven't spoken much about work lately......and since this has been a particularly rough week, I thought I would give an update.

Working in an Emergency Room is a difficult job......no matter what position you are. It is a stressful environment and really takes a specific personality type to work there. Even being so, sometimes even those personality types get pushed to their limits.

Monday.....was a bad day.

We had code after code on Monday. (Codes are Code Blue typically which basically means the patient has stopped breathing, has no heartbeat, or a combination of such)
None of them ended well.......meaning they expired (the cold, institutional way that we pronounce that someone has passed away)

It was rough........for the families most certainly. But for us in the ER it was difficult too. We watch families on some of the worst days of their life. In my position we sit in front of families knowing their loved one is gone, but yet not being able to say anything. We see bad news given to those same individuals. Sometimes they are people we know. We also feel the defeat of not being able to rescue someone from death.

As a Christian I believe that God has a preordained time for each of us to live here on Earth and no matter what........when that time comes, there is nothing we can do. However, being there when that day comes doesn't make that belief any easier at the time.

We see teenage girls get the news that they are pregnant, or happy couples learn that they are miscarrying, a Grandpa diagnosed with lung cancer or a young daughter with a heart defect.

It wears on you. In the end, you know you help more than you harm, and that the good days outweigh the bad.

But when there is a streak of the bad days strung in a row.......it gets a bit overwhelming.......... a bit sad.........a bit depressing.

But next week, a baby might be born, or we may revive someone's mother or save a baby from miscarriage. Those are the days.........

It makes it all worth it
